Action

Sertraline is an SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor which attempts to put right any imbalance of chemicals in the brain. This imbalance is what causes depression, mood swings and abnormal behavior. Serotonin is produced by the brain’s nerve cells and it is through this chemical that nerves communicate. The chemical is released into the space around the nerve end and makes its way to attach itself to another nerve ending. Sometimes it attaches itself to the same nerve that produced it and it is absorbed again. This reuptake means that there isn’t enough serotonin in the brain and this reuptake needs to be stopped to bring back the balance.
