Effexor XR-Venlafaxine Drug Information

Effexor XR is the brand name for the generic drug Venlafaxine which was first manufactured by Wyeth and which Pfizer now markets. Effexor XR is available in capsules of 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg. These are extended release tablets that need to be taken orally. The release of the drug is through the coating membrane and is not dependent on the pH.

Indications

Effexor is prescribed for depression and it helps to improve a patient’s mood as well as help to make his energy levels better. There are other conditions for which physicians prescribe it too.

Action

The drug Venlafaxine has, in studies, showed that it is a potent inhibitor of neuronal serotonin as well as norepinephrine reuptake. It is this potent activity in the central nervous system by the drug that helps in mood upliftment and stabilization.

Side Effects

While Effexor XR is very effective for most people who suffer from depression, there are instances where people do experience side effects – some could be minor and some major and dangerous. This is why care needs to be taken to ensure that anything out of the ordinary be reported to the doctor immediately so he would know just what action should be taken. Some of the side effects include rash on the skin, swelling anywhere in the body, insomnia, getting very irritable and restless, becoming hostile or aggressive and nausea or vomiting. More serious side effects would include increased blood pressure, tremors, increased heartbeat, hallucinations, confusion, seizures and suicidal tendencies. At times, the fever could go high and there could be stiffening of the muscles. When there is swelling, the throat and mouth could swell up too and this could be dangerous.

Contraindications

Pregnant and nursing women would do well to avoid this drug as there are no firm studies to date that totally negate any ill effects on the baby. Glaucoma patients should also be careful and have their eyes checked regularly as should people who are prone to seizures. This drug should not be administered to children who are below 18 years of age, Alcohol should be avoided when you are taking this medication and it would be safer not to drive or work on heavy machinery as you could feel tired and sleepy. People with cardiac complications should also be careful as this drug increases the heart rate and this could result in strain on the heart.
