A Closer Look At Spinal Stenosis

It is, for the most part, an older person’s disease and it usually affects people over fifty. It’s a condition in which the spine narrows and this can mean pressure on your spinal cord or your nerves resulting in pain and discomfort. There are many places along the spine where this narrowing can occur. However, there are three main areas where most people experience spinal stenosis. They are in the vertebral column which is the central column or space which houses the nerves and the spinal cord, the spaces between the vertebra which are the spinal bones and the roots of the nerves which go out from the spinal cord. Sometimes, just a small portion narrows and sometimes it’s a much larger area.

This condition can affect both men and women in the older age range but that does not mean that it never affects younger people. Spinal stenosis can occur in people who could be born with this as a defect or if the spine gets injured and therefore narrows. The spine provides the body with the support it needs for a person to stand, bend, sit or turn around. The spine consists of vertebrae which are held together by facet joints and cartilage. The spinal canal is the space in which you’ll find all the nerves and the spinal cord. The vertebrae have openings through which the branches of the nerves pass and the spine is supported by ligaments which keep the spine straight and don’t allow it to slip out of place.  At the bottom of the spinal canal is the cauda equine which translates to mean horse’s tail – because that’s what it looks like – and this is a bunch of nerve roots that facilitates neurological function in the bottom portion of the body.

Some are born with the spinal column narrower that what it should be. In this case, the symptoms of spinal stenosis are manifested from a very young age. However, for most people, the canal narrows with age as the degenerative process of aging sets in. For some, the ligaments become less elastic and more rigid with age or they might have calcium deposits on them, making them less flexible. Sometimes, the joints enlarge and there might be bone spurs that develop and these could bulge out and narrow the space around the spinal cord. Or a herniated disk could occur and the cartilage could bulge out, narrowing the space.

Whatever the reasons for the narrowing of the spinal column, the fact remains that it could cause a lot of pain and discomfort so there has to be treatment that is prescribed before the pain becomes unbearable. The pain can be managed with pain medication as well as rest, massage and certain exercises. The spine is such an important part of the body and anything that goes wrong with it can cause so much distress so it should be paid attention to. Make sure that you see a good doctor who will treat you or who might refer you to a specialist. Then, make sure you take your medication, do your exercises and rest as you are advised to.

I have spinal stenosis and 2 bulging discs in lower back. I would like to know if anyone experiences frontal pain as in ribs or across abdomen and sholders , tingling in hands and pins and needles in legs and hips…. I have the problem from my neck to mid section and all the way to tailbone with bad discs at L4 &L5.  I have had epidurals, no relief… one Dr. a back specialist told me I had nothing serious going on… A Clinic stuck me in physical therapy which made things worse. My family Dr. has me on antideppressants and Norco for pain and that is starting to not work to alleviate the pain as well as at first. I have trouble pushing the grocery cart and carrying my groceries in…. can’t use a broom to sweep because my upper and lower back are killing me when I am done… any of this sound familiar???? It sounds like I am going to have to live this way.. am 58 and was an active person a couple yrs ago. And I do mow my yard but am in bad pain afterward.

Dear Klstein:  My lower 3 discs, 3,4,5, grew together, had to have lower lunbar decompression surgery, Trial nurostimulator surgery, and permanent neurostimulator surgery.  Diagnosed with Severe Spinal Stanosis. Yes frontal pain, Ya cant ever figure out whether ya need to go to the pooper or not! Same here tingiling everywhere, could not do epidurals, they couldnt get the needle into my spine, took 2 years to finally get diagnosed.  The nuerostimulator helps some, but I believe my Stanosis is returning, when I had the trial stimulator put in, i felt like a new man.  Not now.  What the heck, even though I’m in Texas, going to try Medicinal Marijane…..I’m out of options also!

  • Dukeybarra

I’ve been dealing with back issues for 19 years now with 2 back surgeries under my belt.  I had to make a decision early on in this process to give up playing sports.  No more baseball, softball, flag football or golfing because of this.  Recently I’ve been diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis which brings me to my next question.  As I work at a Casino will I be able to get back to the point where I feel confidant enough to go back to working 10 hour shifts.  Or will I have to find other alternatives to make a living.  I have never thought about my long term goals in life.  I’ve always tried to live one day at a time especially with my back condition.  As of right now my only goals are to be able to walk my daughter down the aisle when she gets married next fall rather then roll down the aisle.  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

    • Jigger

I drove a pick up truck(3/4 ton} for 7 years checking out the misc. things that go along with Water Production for a city and had to drive off pavement and bumpy roads at 100 miles a day to ckeck everything out and repair, my back was so jacked up I had to slouch down in my set to get any relief. I eventucly had to have a back surgery with 2  titaniam clips between L 4/5 - L 5/6 to stop the numbness for the spinal stenosis. It took away the pinched never problem BUT still have A PAIN IN MY BACK! Now i have knee problems but my knee doctor said it was from my back problem, so figure?
You have to stay active and walk as much as you can. therapy is good if you can afford it, and pray alot! Oh by the way I’am 62 and still kicking but not very high!

I also have spinal stenosis (cervical area) and have had it for approx 6 yrs. I had surgery to have a disc removed and had a cadaver bone put in place of the disc and had 2 or 3 screws placed in also to hold things in place.  I have also recently begun to have pain in the mid and lower section of the spine so, I am guessing that the stenosis is spreading.  I have also been diagnosed with scoliosis and osteoarthritis.  But, my reason for writing today is to answer Mrs Kitty Morris19.  You asked is there any advice that may help with the pain.  As silly as this may sound – I have found that going to a tanning bed really helps.  I don’t go for the tan (although that does make me feel good to not be so white) but, it makes my bones feel so good to be heated up when the weather is cold and damp.  I have a hard time explaining how wonderful it feels to have that warmth from the inside out.  Until you have done it you wont understand.  I hope you try it. But, you must wear indoor tanning lotion and the eye goggles.

So true. As a mom in her 40′s, never a drug taker until my injury-now having been on every opiate and strength-I too can eat only soft bland food as my stomach has been destroyed and my mind went from a quick witted, organized, hard worker and good writer gifted wcreativly, to a bedridden  hermit no longer attractive, bright or creative, mind eaten away leaving a Queen Ant in my plce.  Pot is no only reasonable, it’s comprehensional to me as the perfect answer.

Have you tried facet injections to relieve the pain?  I found a great Osteopath in a Spine institute. Mine is from a long fall that was not fixed.. I wont tell you everything, but I also have everything you said.
Have you also considered acupuncture, it has made my life much more managable as it tends to tell your ligaments and muscles to cooperate with each other in a natural way, thereby reducing further damage. I write this as a patient not a professional. All we can think about is relief. I also take very warm epsom salt baths, my own hot and cold packs, and got an inversion table at walmart for $200.00. this is great as it stretches tight ligaments and releases some of the pressure on your spine and nerves. It’s bulky but amazing.

I just read your post and I want to make a suggestion if I might. I am a woman with nervre root impingment in several places. Doing facet injections to shut the pain and noise down, it is wonderful and safe. In the mean time, I went to walmart and bought these warming patches called (WELL PAIN PATCH), they are wonderful, stay hot a long time, and cost $.97 a patch ( 6″x 8:)
I cut off whatever size I need, no smell, jjust relief. Just a thought.

Paralysis is WHAT HAPPENED! Thats what the risks are if you let someone twist and bend your alreadly broken pain ridden bosy..sorry not a good idea. I know I live in pain 24/7 with spianl stenosis

  • Laughingpoodles

Lynn, I’ve been there and still am, however, get a SSD lawyer, asap.  They know how to respond to SSI and can cite the minute details in the laws that you and I never could.  Even though you have to pay roughly 25% of your compensation, it is better than 0% of nothing!  I was turned down 3 times, after I got an attorney I was approved soon after.  I can believe the pain you live in!  Good luck~

  • Kathy

Christine, you are my hero – you have endured so much with such a positive attitude. I wish I could say the same for myself!!

  • Pokeypapa

Dear Ymounts: same as you except i’ve had lower lunbar decompression surgery, trial stimulator surgery { I felt fantastic}  and permanent stimulator surgery, now I feel horiible, I was diagnosed with severe..severe spinal stenosis, my lower lunbars 3,4,and5 were fused to my lower end, In the lower lunbar surgery, I had eight screws put in 6 for the decompression discs, 2 in my sacrum.  Stimulators and your body will vary, constantly.  With a good clinician, they should be able to help you with the stimulator.  I was told in the begginning that had I waited 2 months, tjey would have clipped my nerves, and put me in a wheel chair.  I can still walk, but not very far, and yes I still cry from the pain at least everyother day!  I hoped I helped you!

  • Klstein

I am so sorry.. but I don’t understand the system that won’t allow both of you to get ssi… if you are disabled you should not be turned down!!!! I would consult an attorney!!! This stinks and I wish you both the best but I would keep trying!!  I am so familiar with your pain!!  I will pray for something to come of this in a good way!!!!

  • Klstein

Good luck Jim… I have severe spinal stenosis and I too can hardly stand the pain! I worked mot of my life in factories and warehouses.. and lifting heavy stuff. I have 2 bulging discs at the L4 L5 level and spinal stenosis from neck all the way to tailbone… and had a torn hip tendon last summer while mowing.  Have lost muscle in my right calf and am in pain constantly.. am on Norco which is not working at all any more. Have had epidurals with little help.. and no one wants to talk to me about doing anything more! Its like they think its something that can’t be fixed! Its scary when you are 58 and are worried about ending up paralyzed… thats my biggest fear.. that the Drs. will wait too long and then its too late! I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you find some answers!
