Alternate Treatments For Sciatica

When it comes to sciatica it is interesting to note that there are a plethora of treatment options available for patients complaining of back pain and various other thigh/leg acute shooting pains.  These causes and professional treatments are outlined – but many patients may opt for more traditional or naturalistic approaches towards treating their pain.  In these cases, peripheral healers and other methods of treating sciatica come into play.

Two lines of treatment are today also looked upon to be level headed methods that complement modern medicines: Acupuncture and Chiropractors.  Acupuncturists look at the pressure points of your body, trying to relieve pressure and allow positive energy to be increased within the body.  Often, these treatments which we’ve all seen (including the needles and pressure points) are effective especially when coupled with herbal remedies.  Chiropractors are also medical professionals, but their methods and approach to treating the patient deal with more holistic approaches where the body is looked at on a broader basis.  Chiropractors seek to introduce spinal manipulation into the treatment plan, which has not yet been satisfactorily been proved to be as effective as the accepted medical treatment options out there today.  However, millions of Americans have tried this method and there are many who have been satisfied with the results.

Other interesting innovations in medical treatment of back pain have involved thinking outside of the box.  Sciatica pain can be reduced using aquatic therapy – this involves using water to soothe the muscles and work out the joints in order to improve a herniated disc or put the necessary bones or nerves back into their place.  Water is a very nurturing environment, allowing little resistance to the joints and provides the ultimate relaxation, helping to soothe the pain.

Doctors usually recommend that a patient use exercises and new routines for working out different muscle groups as the best and most effective measures for treating sciatica.  This will involve “body work” which will put muscles that work together (or are said to work synergistically) and make them more strong.   Since our muscles are inter-connected in a grouped network infrastructure, it is important to make sure that some muscles that may be weakened are stabilized by other muscles in the body.

The key thing to stress is the importance of keeping your body healthy and in shape.  Many studies have proved the importance of rest, but at the same time light resistance and strength training can help release the tension and the buildup that is causing the strain or back pain in sciatica. Another great treatment option could be yoga, in which the patient goes into meditation and uses different exercises or poses which will allow stress and anxiety to be cured, and muscles to be stretched and fortified.  With all this exercise, adding in a good night’s sleep along with a good diet high in calcium will ensure that the patient will keep a health schedule and feel better in the morning, the time when back pains are usually the worst.
