This generic drug is a steroid and it is used to prevent the severe symptoms of asthma as well as treat conditions and disorders like psoriasis, lupus, arthritis, ulcerative colitis and many others.
Action
The drug is a steroid and as such, it stops the release of certain substances in the body which are the ones responsible for inflammation anywhere in the body.
Side Effects
This drug could cause a few side effects for some people, some minor, some quite severe and it would be advisable to keep your doctor informed about anything that seems out of the ordinary. The minor ones are dry mouth and skin, insomnia, excessive perspiration, stomach bloating or pain, nausea and weight gain. The more serious ones are blurred vision, bloody stools, very high blood pressure, buzzing in the ears, irregular heartbeat, seizures, difficulty in breathing, swelling of hands or feet and depression.
Caution
Your doctor will need to know about every medication you take as well as the vitamins and herbal supplements if any. You will have to give him a detailed medical history, including your family history and also tell him if there is any drug or alcohol abuse or if you smoke. He will need to know is you have been allergic to any medication before and what ailments and conditions you had or have.
Contraindications
This generic drug is contraindicated in the case of fungal infections so you should tell your doctor if you do have a fungal infection anywhere on your body. There are certain medications that can interact badly with steroids so you need to be careful and you need to inform your doctor about every medication you take, even if it is an aspirin. Steroids tend to weaken the immune system so try not to go too close to people with infectious diseases. Chicken pox and measles can be especially dangerous. You should also be careful not to get a ‘live’ vaccine while you are on this steroid. This medication should not be stopped abruptly and you should never change the dosages unless your doctor tells you to. He might do that if you are under a lot of stress or if you are ill. The drug should be used cautiously when you suffer from high blood pressure, cardiac complications, liver and kidney disorders, thyroid problems, TB, osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcers in the stomach or depression. Be sure to follow your doctor’s advice to the letter if he does prescribe this medication when you suffer from any of these ailments. Pregnant women and nursing mothers would do well to avoid this drug unless absolutely required. Alcohol is contraindicated with this drug.
