Mobic-Meloxicam Drug Information

Mobic is the brand name of the generic drug Meloxicam and it is manufactured by Boehringer-Ingelheim. It is available as 7.5 mg or 15 mg yellow, biconvex, uncoated tablets. The 7.5 mg tablet is round while the 15 mg tablet is oblong. This drug belongs to the class of drugs called NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

It treats the swelling, pain and the tenderness which result from the inflammation.

Mobic/Meloxicam is used for:

Action

The drug acts by reducing the levels of prostaglandins which are the cause of the inflammation which causes the pain, stiffness, swelling and fever. Once the inflammation is controlled, the symptoms become easier to bear.

Side Effects

These drugs tend to affect the gastric tract so you can expect some gas, bloating, tummy upsets and maybe even a bit of a stomach ache at times. Many of the stomach problems can be avoided if this drug is taken with food or maybe a glass of milk. Otherwise, on an empty stomach, this medication could cause ulcers. Mobic is less of a problem than other NSAIDs in this respect but it would be better to take this too with some food in order to avoid the side effects. Other side effects include headaches, rash and itching, pain in the back and the joints, difficulty sleeping and tiredness. The more serious ones are fainting spells, accelerated heartbeat and blood pressure, bruising and bleeding, kidney and bladder infections, shortness of breath, mood swings and seizures.

Caution

You need to be sure that you are not allergic to this medication before you take it. If you are not sure, your doctor will prescribe tests to be done. This drug cannot be taken with certain other medication and also with certain health conditions so make sure you tell your doctor about your whole medical history and about all the medication and supplements that you are taking. You need to be cautious if you have respiratory problems or any liver, kidney or heart complaints. This drug might make you drowsy so take care not to drive or work with dangerous machinery after you have taken it. Alcohol and tobacco use should be stopped or curtailed and sun exposure should be kept to the minimum as the skin could be sensitive. You need to tell your dentist or surgeon that you are on this medication before any procedure.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in the last trimester of pregnancy though ideally it should be avoided right through. It should be avoided by nursing mothers too. It is also to be avoided with the very young and the very old.

I COULDN’T SLEEP WHEN I TOOK IT BUT I DON’T KNOW WHETHER IT WAS DUE TO SOME THING ELSE I WAS TAKING.

  • . BETTY WINSTON

I HAVE BEEN TAKING MELOXICAN 15 NG ONCE A DAY FOR 4 WEEKS.  I TAKE IT WITH FOOD SO IT HAS NOT UPSET MY STOMACH BUT I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY IMPROVEMENT WITH STIFNESS IN MY BACK AND KNEES.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE IMPROVEMENT.  THANKS, B. WINSTON

    • E.C.

when i first started taking meloxicam it seemed like it wasn’t working also but i continued and my knees stopped hurting after a some weeks,.  I just recently stopped taking it for about a month because of side effects reported on TV,  The Dr. said i had fibromyalga and i was hurting so bad one morning i took a pill and to my surprise all the body aches i was feeling left, so i’m back on it. Thank the Lord, I haven’t had any side effects

      • Dorisguad

Do you remember what the side effects reported on TV were?  I’ve been prescribed Meloxicam(Mobid) but a little afraid to take it as I’m not sure of side effects and Dr. was not very communicative.  I worry most about effects on my stomach and blood pressure.  Thanks so much.

        • Drosi

If your dr. was very communicative, then you should ask that he sit down and answer your questions.  I mean, we are paying thru the nose for their expertise.  IF he then won’t answer, see if you can find another dr.

        • joanne

Look it up om the computer, this medication has many side effects

    • Belsy Valle

Hi Betty, I am a christian, a child of the most high. The doctors told me that I had RA since September of 2010, but by faith , I do not receive what they tell me. It’s clearly in the bible that everything that GOD made is good. I am seeing a naturist/natural doctor in South Gate, California, everyday I feel much better. I don’t take none of these medicines. I take herbal and Thank the LORD , I am doing better, it will be a year this September 2011 that I have not seen my RA doctor.

      • Margie Livingston

I am interested in what herbs you take. Have your tried Limbrel?

  • Lillisa5375

I am getting off of them because i am bleeding now

    • Dorisguad

Just reading your comment about bleeding.  Was that because of Meloxicam? (Mobic).  If so, what dose did you take daily and for how long?  I am already on so many meds I really hate to take more unless it will really be effective against my arthristis pain and won’t cause me a lot of side effects (like stomach bleeding).  Thank you!

      • Lmchcs

I have been taking Meloxicam 15mg since January and have developed a very large (bigger than a man’s thumb) bleeding ulcer.  I suffer from disc degeneration/arthritis but otherwise am very healthy and eat very healthy.  The ulcer was completely from the meloxicam.  The prescribing doctor failed to mention this side effect.  I had no gas or pain prior to this week when I began with severe pain vomiting and diarrhea which included blood.

        • Liz Loggins

i am taking meloxicam also and my feet and leggs are swelling all the time and i gained weight it does help but i dont like the side effects

        • rlh

maybe you should have done as i am doing now research it first .You should always do that .Seems like all my doctor does is sit there and type on his lap top other than that he doesant even ask how i am doing .I have tried to find another one but most of them only give you 5 min.

  • Aimhi

I have been taking meloxicam for abaout 4 years, my dr. also has me take a stomach pill, prilosec, to protect my stomach from any side effects of the meloxicam and both seem to work very well. I can sure tell when I miss a meloxicam pill, but then I take it and my hands feel better.  No other side effects have I noticed.

  • Neha_Harpreet

I have been taking meloxicam 15mg for over 2 months and find that the longer I take it the harder it is for me to breath. I have other respitory problems and am taking it for my knee.  I also notice that I have gained about 8 pounds and am very swollen. I am going to stop taking the meds because breathing is more important then stopping the pain.

    • Bert//Adirondacks

I have been on Meloxicam for about 10 months.  All of a sudden in Sept after transferring some fire wood to my shed I noticed a shortness of breath.  It has been getting progressively worse, especially at night when I lay down.  I have also noticed that my hands seem it itch at different times.  I’m going to keep the drug on hand for a while but I am going to stop taking it and see if the breathing problem stops.  I’ll put up with the pain too.

  • Talina Mills

My husband took Mobic one time and his whole face started itching and swelled up…. ALLERGIC REACTION, be careful because it can also make your tounge and throat swell..

  • Rose

I HAVE BEEN TAKING MELOXICAM FOR 2 MONTHS AND THE DOCTOR SAID HE IS TAKING ME OFF FOR AWHILE TO GIVE MY BODY A REST. AT FIRST IT DID’NT HELP THE ARTHERITIS IN MY HIP AND THAN AFTER 2 WEEKS IT FELT BETTER. SO HE ADVISED TYLENOL FOR AWHILE. I DID GET GASSEY AND STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS SLEEPING ALL NIGHT.

  • Anonymous

I HAVE TAKEN THIS DRUG FOR 7 DAYS WITH FOOD.  SO FAR NO STOMACH PROBLEMS BUT I HAVE HAD SEVERE LEG CRAMPS FOR THE LAST 5 NIGHTS.
I HAVE STOPPED TAKING THIS BECAUSE OF THE LEG CRAMPS.
I BELIEVE THAT I DO NOT HAVE ARTHRITIS.  MY PAIN IS FROM A BROKEN BONE THAT GOES INTO MY KNEE THAT WAS NEVER PROPERLY TREATED.

  • Massie Toni

I just started this drug last week. I have noticed the past two days when I get home from work my legs and abdomen are swollen and my feet and joints hurt.

  • Massie Toni

I am also finding a lot of brusing on my body. But I take baby ASA every day. Should I stop taking the baby asa?

  • joanne

I am curious about weight gain with this product.  Though it takes care of the pain, I have gained almost 15 lbs since I started taking it. anyone out there who has the same problem please respond

    • Eunice

Hi joanne, I was given meloxicam for a ganglion cyst.  It’s only for 30 days but, I too have gained 15 pounds and I have 5 days left.

      • joanne

I stopped taking it after reading all the side effects, weight gain is included, along with respiratory problems.  It states that you will still have more pain in your joints along with kidney and bladder infections and high blood pressure.   I will have to try something else.  It doesn’t sound like a good med to me.

    • Hammersmith

I too have noticed a 15 pound weight gain since taking this medication. I am on a low calorie diet to control this or try to control the weight gain. Not sure if it’s this medication or the others that I take…

    • Gdagen

I also gained weight, but i thought it was because of a different reason, also I have a hard time going to sleep, and my hips still hurt when I go to bed.  I am going to stop taking it and see if the problems go away.

  • Haggy

Like most of these new drugs, it’s not something you want to take for a long time. My experience with this drug, like most, is that I end up with more problems than I started with. It cleared up the swelling but then he died from the side effects. Technology is wonderful when it works. I feel like a guinea pig as I find most doctors say, try this and let’s see if it helps (let’s just see what happens).

  • Jo

Please advise. I have been on Meloxicam 15MG for over  year….I still have PAIN, but no swelling.   In this past year I have had a “bladder” problem which is being checked into now.   Could this have anything to do with the Meloxicam?

  • JMLITTLE317

AFTERREADING ALL THE COMMENTS, I’M NOT SURE IF I NEED TO TAKE THIS MELOXICAM NOW. I WAS GIVEN 7.5 MG. DID ANYONE GAIN WEIGHT WITH THE DOSAGE??????????

    • Peggyshepard2005

Yes, I did….been on for about 8 months, gained over 10 lbs. didn’t think it could have been the meloxican.  I have had three sinus infections while taking this med. PCP told me to stop taking it until infection clears up. He also said meloxican can lower your resistance to fight off infections. Will stop taking as of today…..looking for natural/herbal treatment.

  • Margaretbryan18

My sister and myself is taking meloxicam. She had to come off of it because she started having seizures. I have problems breathing and I’ve also gained weight it doesn’t seem to help with the stiffness or the swelling

  • Cynthia

I started Meloxicam almost 30 days ago (have a couple left); having some problems so I came online to see if it is one of those dangerous to stop abruptly; doctor has not said I would keep taking it but I see there are refills.  I am not sure how much it has helped w/ the pain & swelling in my knee (most of the swelling still happens) because I had a cortisone shot too so I do not know how much relief was from it. Anyway, having Disturbing dreams, Fluid retention, Nasal congestion, Weight gain – fast, Constipation – back again, Headaches – daily back again. From  the Meloxicam?  From the Hashi’s disease ( Perhaps making the Synthroid ineffective)?

I had began to wonder if this was just a pain pill rather than something to help heal…reading online, I see that it is supposed to reduce inflamation so that would help heal unless it is something that you have to keep on taking to keep the inflamation down???

  • Ebeau

No weigh gain, but I seem to be moody, teary-eyed, extremely fatigued, and cannot sleep; causing MORE fatigue and teary-eyedness. I cry at the drop of a hat! I just flushed the rest of it down the toilet! I’d rather have inflammation than to feel like all of that. Did anyone else experience these symptoms?

  • Julsbrundige

is there any other color of pill’s?

  • Patti

So far I’m not impressed with this medicine at all…….about 29 days now and my hands don’t feel any better!!!!!  In fact they sting worse!!!  I have a rash on my forehead between my eyes that seems to want to flake away all day…Cute!!  Luckily no weight gain.  I’ve mostly lost my appetite…..except for junk foods, that I really normally don’t eat that much of but lately they’ve been great!!  Oh well.. Dr. visit in 3 day’s…who knows??

  • Dbowers17

Does anyone know if it is safe to to Meloxicam and Humira at the same time? I just started both of them and kind of confused because it seems both treat the same thing.

  • Mbuden

i have good experience with meloxicam. It help me with my pain but as soon I stop taking my problem is coming back. i dint have any side effects and i just put my self back on a pill. maybe i need to stay on it for few months before this will really work. I am after car accident and i hurt my sternum.

  • SueFla

The doctor gave me this drug for terrble pain in my left ribs.  I believe it’s called costochondritis.
I took one pill and had a horrible headache so discontinued and went back to Advil.  Mobic
did help  the pain in my ribs but not worth the headache.  I tried one more time for bad
shoulder pain, this time I didn’t get the headache but I became very itchy and some rash
occured.  Bottom line, too many side effects.  It’s a shame as it did help the pain.

I’ve been on 15 mg of Meloxicam for better than 3 weeks now.  I decided to look up possible side effects of this drug because of a bizarre symptom that has developed.  I avoid the internet for the purpose of looking up symptoms because they can scare the average person to death, but am I glad I looked at this blog.  I see symptoms that I have been experiencing that I never even considered to be related to this drug.  I noticed I was gaining weight and was beating myself up about it although I wasn’t doing anything different.  I can relate to a few other symptoms but here is my weird one…My tongue hurts.  It’s as though I just ate an entire bag of vinegar and salt potato chips, this symptom has been around for at least two weeks and I am miserable.  I read that someone had problems with a swelling tongue and now I am convinced that it’s the drug.  I’m going to go off the meds and see what happens.

  • Mary

I don’t take this drug, but both of my sister’s do, for different Autoimmune diseases… I am researching info for a friend who has just been giving 3 weeks worth….the bruising is the biggest complaint for my sisters…. and it’s pretty bad…one bump and it looks like someone beat them up ???

  • Anne S.

My dr prescribed this for a rotator cuff impingement. After a few weeks I developed a rash which I was given an injection (and brescribed benadryl and pepcid) and steroids and I stopped taking the meloxicam .  The rash turned into hives and very bad heartburn.  It’s been about 6 wks, I had to go to the ER for the hives, was given another injection and more steroids which my dr said were too strong so he cut the dosage and I’m finally off them but the hives and heartburn are still pretty bad.  I had been taking baby aspirin and tramadol  (which contains aspirin) prior to the meloxican.  My dr wants me to see an allergist and dermatologist but I can’t afford all that.  I think the meloxicam along with the aspirin damaged my digestive system, hence the heartburn and think that should be my first consultation as I’ve had stomach problems for over 40 yrs and am due for an endoscopy and colonoscopy anyway.  I hope they find a cause soon as this is affecting my quality of life.  Now I’m only taking benadryl when needed, epsom salts baths and using an anti-itch cream but they only give temporary relief.  I also take restoril to help me sleep and hydrodocone when the stomach pain is severe.  My symptoms get more severe in the evening but can appear anytime of the day and on every part of my body even on my scalp.  I try not to scratch but am not always successful.  I have sores everywhere from scratching, even on my scalp. This is the most miserable I’ve been in a long time and want it to stop.

  • Cat_mccreary

Hi Betty, I have taken Mobic for 8 weeks too.  There is some differance in my pain levels.  I stopped Mobic for 8 weeks to see if there was a change in pain.  Mobic does help, just not enough. I am taking Mobic for my Fibormyalgia; any help to control this rollercoaster of pain is a blessing.   However I do see/feel  mood swings  with this medication.  I will have to do a recheck with the doctor.

    I have been taking meloxicam for a little over a week;  I had fallen and injured my left shoulder/arm about 3 weeks ago before seeking medical attention;    at first the pain seemed to subside on the medication, however, the longer I am on this drug, the sicker I feel and the pain seems to have returned;    also have not been able to sleep, and feel nauseous; have gained 5 lbs also;     I am amazed that I am not able to get an xray to determine the exact problem (I have an HMO and need a referral which the doctor determined I did not need);  after over 4 weeks of severe pain I am still unable to get a referral for an xray;  how can a doctor treat my shoulder pain/arm properly without seeing what the problem is;   today I was given yet another appointment to see the doctor to discuss the pain;  I have not slept in weeks properly and am appalled;   I was told everyone is different regarding tolerating the med……………..what does that mean?  Tonight I am going to the ER for an xray anyway, without a referral I will be liable for all costs incurred but the pain is excruciating…….. I have stopped taking meloxicam and get better pain relief with other NSAIDS;   I would be interested in knowing what other pain relievers seem to work for shoulder injuries;

Woweeeee! Thanks for this blog, you all. I just got a prescription for this drug today (3 months after hip replacement) with the idea of helping improve mobility. After reading this blog, there is NO WAY I’m going to take this medicine, am going to keep working out/therapy and use Aleve.Reading all of your experiences is an eye opener…and my heart goes out to everyone who is grappling with pain they have trouble getting out of . Thanks and blessings to you all, from Santa Barbara.
