Wellbutrin XL is the brand name of the generic drug Bupropion manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and it is sold in extended release tablets of strengths 150 mg and 300 mg and the tablets are colored cream-white to pale-yellow.
Indications
The drug is prescribed for depression as well as seasonal affective disorder or SAD which occurs when there is less sunlight during the fall or winter seasons. It is sometimes prescribed as a preventive for SAD or depression in people who suffer from it every year. The drug is also prescribed to stop smoking as well as other conditions like ADHD. Since it is an extended release tablet which is taken once a day, care should be taken not to break, chew or crush the tablet or it will lose its extended release action which makes it slowly release the medication to have an effect for many hours.
Action
The drug acts on the central nervous system and while it is not clear yet exactly how it works it is well metabolized in the human body and takes effect around five hours of taking it.
Side Effects
The side effects of this drug range from mild to serious and something that could start off as seemingly minor could progress to dangerous especially in the case of allergic reactions so every effect should be monitored. There could be dryness in the mouth, nausea and maybe vomiting, constipation, insomnia, blurred vision, drowsiness and dizziness, frequent urination and changes in the taste. There could be a rash on the skin and there could also be migraines and agitation. Other side effects are flushing and hot flashes as well as feverishness, tics and tremors. There could be a problem with the hearing and it could also cause palpitations, nervousness and loss of memory. Sometimes, there is great weight loss or weight gain.
Caution
The doctor should be told about any condition that the patient has as well as every medication and supplement that is being taken. This drug could have drug interactions and there could be allergic reactions so care should be taken by close monitoring for any unusual signs.
