Strattera is the brand name of the generic drug Atomoxetine manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company and it is available in capsules of 10 mg and 25 mg. It is a prescription drug that is used to treat ADHD.
Indications
It is used to treat ADHD in children, teenagers and adults and it is a good alternative prescription drug for patients who are not too keen on Ritalin. Strattera is a non-stimulant drug and this is one reason why many doctors as well as patients prefer it. While stimulants might work faster, non-stimulants might be better in the long run because there are fewer ups and downs and fewer people using it experience adverse side effects.
Action
Strattera is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which means it inhibits the presynaptic norepinephrine transporter which in turns means more norepinephrine available in order to control hyperactivity and to increase the attention span. At least, this seems to be the best explanation for how it works though as yet, there’s no conclusive evidence of exactly how it affects this area of the brain. There have been many tests done with this drug and it has emerged to be fairly safe as well as effective.
Side Effects
There could be mild as well as serious side effects. Some of them are dizziness and excessive sweating, dry mouth, not feeling hungry, changes in blood pressure, palpitations, constipation, nausea and vomiting. There could also be incidences of sexual problems and changes in weight and height especially in growing children. There could be dark colored urine, aggressiveness and a hostile attitude and agitation. In some men, there were prostrate problems that were noticed. If there is the slightest hint of suicidal thoughts or attempts, medical help should be got immediately.
Caution
It would be wise to tell the doctor about every vitamin, supplement and medicine you are taking because many prescription drugs could have drug reactions. You must keep your doctor informed about any reaction as well as update him on family history like the incidence of bipolar disorder or any allergies. You must closely monitor moods, any kind of changes or anything that is different from the usual. Any reaction could call for a change of medication so this is very important. It is also important that you keep to schedules and dosages – there should be no flexibility here when it comes to any prescription drug. Caution should also be exercised when anti-depressants are taken along with this drug.
Contraindications
Strattera is contraindicated in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as well as in patients who suffer from cardiovascular diseases and severe hypertension. It should not be used on children below six years and should be avoided in very old people.
