Intuniv is the brand name of the generic drug Guanfacine manufactured by Shire US Inc, The once-daily extended release tablets are available in strengths of 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg or 4 mg. It is a prescription drug for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder for children and teenagers.
Indications
The drug is used to treat ADHD in children and teenagers and also as a hypertensive drug for adults. It is given once in the morning and the effects last through the day.
Action
Guanfacine is called a selective alpha2A-adrenergic receptor agonist and while it does treat the symptoms of ADHD, it is not a psychostimulant and it is yet not too clear how it acts in this condition to bring about a degree of calm. What is known is that it acts on the vasomotor center to bring down the heart rate. As it is an extended release tablet, it must not be crushed or broken but must be swallowed whole.
Side Effects
The side effects of Intuniv include headaches, irritability, lack of hunger, nausea, extreme tiredness and constipation. There could also be a fall in the blood pressure levels which need to be monitored closely. The mouth could be dry and there could be a sense of lethargy right through the day. Dizzy spells could also occur and care should be taken that the patient is not engaged in anything that needs quick reflexes like driving. There are effects on weight and this should be regularly checked as the patient tends to gain weight with this medication. There could also be drug interactions with other medications so any other lines of treatment that is going on concurrently must be carefully checked.
Caution
The drug must not be used with alcohol and the patient must drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated. They should also not go out in the sun too much and stay cool, not get overheated, especially by over-exercising. More than one dose at a time or higher strengths must not be taken without consulting the doctor as it can have serious results. Driving and indulging in dangerous activities that require quick reflexes must be avoided. This drug slows down everything, including your motor skills and your thinking. Make sure that the drug is kept safe and away from children and pets. In case of surgery, the doctor must be informed that the patient is taking this drug so appropriate measures can be taken to prevent drug reactions.
Contraindications
Women who are expecting, nursing mothers, young children below six and geriatrics should not use this drug. Patients with severe kidney, liver and heart problems should also avoid this drug.
