Focalin XR is the brand name of the generic drug Dexmethylphenidate manufactured by Novartis and it is available in tablet strengths of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 mg. It is a psychostimulant which works on the central nervous system and it is a prescription drug for ADHD. As these are extended release tablets, they work on children to keep them calm right through their school day.
Indication
The tablets are prescribed for children, teenagers and adults for ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and because of the extended release property, the effects last for many hours. There is need for a comprehensive program when it comes to ADHD treatment and this drug will have to be had in conjunction with other forms of therapy as well.
Action
Focalin XR is a dopamine-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which works on the brain’s nervous system, helping in reducing hyperactivity. The drug will have to be taken once in the morning, every day and the effects last through the day. It should not be broken, crushed or chewed but drunk down with a glass of water in order to get the best results from the extended release mechanism.
Side Effects
Focalin XR exhibits side effects which range from the mild to the serious and any change must be communicated to the doctor. There could be skin irritation and hives, swelling of the mouth, lips and throat, problems affecting the eyes and vision, dizziness, nausea, yellowing of the eyes, drowsiness, seizures and even hallucinations. Care must be taken and any change must be monitored and attended to. There could also be suicidal tendencies and uncontrolled muscle spasms and bodily movements like convulsions. There have also been instances of tachycardia or accelerated heartbeat and anorexia. In children, there could be bouts of indigestion because of the extended release medication.
Caution
Careful monitoring is a must and the doctor must be told about all medications and supplements that are being taken as well as any other condition that the patient suffers from. This drug could have serious drug reactions with other medication. Any side effect must be communicated to the doctor immediately because it can get serious.
