Dexedrine is the brand name of the generic drug Dextroamphetamine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Corporation in tablets with strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg. This prescription drug is used to treat ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders well as ADD where there is no hyperactivity present. It is referred to as a psychostimulant drug and belongs to the amphetamine class of drugs.
Indications
This drug is prescribed when there is a need for focus and not to feel drowsy all the time. ADD and ADHD patients can benefit a lot from this drug because it can be very potent and bring about changes very quickly. They feel a lot more attentive and not as distracted as they used to do and they are able to concentrate for longer spells. It also goes a long way in stabilizing the emotions. There has to be a total program of treatment in place however for best results. This drug is also use in the treatment of narcolepsy which is when people feel sleepy all the time and go into a deep sleep at intervals.
Action
The drug acts on the central nervous system and stimulates it. While no one really can tell how it works on calming the brain, one can see the results. While it stimulates the brain, there is also stimulation in other areas and you can see blood pressure going up or it could have a respiratory stimulant action.
Side Effects
There could be bad withdrawal symptoms when this drug is stopped so care should be taken to see that the patient is well supervised. While on this drug, there could be instances of flushing, dry mouth, dilated pupils and dry eyes, palpitations or convulsions and in extreme cases, even coma and heart attacks. There could also be feelings of invincibility, repetitive actions and extreme agitation. People who are allergic to aspirin should also avoid it as it has tartrazine, a yellow coloring which a small number pf people are allergic to. These drugs should also not be used as pick-me-ups or as a means of weight control. Children under six years of age should be prescribed this drug with extreme caution. You must inform the doctor of all the medication, the vitamins, supplements and herbal medicines that you are taking so he can check and monitor for reaction.
Contraindications
Any severe cardiovascular disease will contraindicate this drug. Other ailments or conditions that mean you have to avoid this will be hyperthyroidism, severe hypertension or glaucoma. Pregnant women and mothers who are breastfeeding their babies should not use this drug too. The drug is also contraindicated in the case of substance abusers.
