Catapres-Clonidine Drug Information

Catapres is the brand name of the generic drug Clonidine which is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Promeco S.A. de C.V. The drug is available in three strengths – 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg, 0.3 mg. It is a prescription drug that is used in the treatment of ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Indication

The drug used to be prescribed for hypertension but over the last few years, it has been prescribed for many ailments from ADHD to neuropathic pain, to counter certain stimulant effects and even for anesthetic use, mainly for epidurals during delivery. It is also prescribed for Tourette Syndrome which is a disorder of uncontrollable tics. Sometimes, it is prescribed for period pain and for hot flashes in women.

Action

Catapres acts very fast on the brain stem and on the central nervous system. The action of the drug on the blood vessels relaxes them and the blood flows more freely. There is a lowering of blood pressure and a slowing down of cardiac activity as well as a slowing down of the pulse rate over time.

Side Effects

There could be reactions with other medication so you should make sure your doctor knows everything that you are taking. This includes any vitamins, supplements and herbal products too. Raised blood pressure is one of the possible side effects so your BP will have to be monitored regularly.
