Adderall XR-Amphetamine And Dextroamphetamine Drug Information

Adderall XR is the brand name for the generic drug combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine from Shire US, Inc. The drug is available in extended release tablets of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 mg strengths and is a prescribed drug for ADHD. It is meant to be taken once daily.

Indications

Adderall XR is used to treat ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Unlike plain Adderall, it cannot be used to treat narcolepsy as well. When it comes to ADHD, Adderall XR is supposed to have what has been described as a smoother effect than Adderall, which means that the highs and lows are not so sudden or sharp.

Action

Adderall XR has two types of beads and uses the Microtol extended release system. The first set of beads dissolves as soon as the medication is taken and half of the medication goes to work. The second set of beads releases the medication very slowly so the effect is felt a few hours later. In plain Adderall, the action is IR or instant release whereas in Adderall XR the effect lasts over a number of hours as the medication is released slowly. There’s usually a perceptible difference in a few days when this drug is prescribed for ADHD. The dose depends on the individual and how mild or severe his condition is.

Side Effects

There could be changes in sexual desires while being treated with this drug. Nervousness, becoming agitated, twitches, tremors, not being able to sleep, indigestion and fatigue are some of the side effects that could happen. There could also be an unpleasant taste in the mouth and weight loss as well as an upset tummy and dizziness.

Caution

The dose must be strictly adhered to, taken at the proper time and not increased in any way without the doctor’s advice. There must be no attempt to have a double dose if you have missed one as it could have dangerous results. People with slightly high levels of blood pressure must be careful because it can make the levels go up. The capsules must be swallowed whole and not crushed or broken or chewed. The medication must be kept away from children and pets, preferably locked up. If the tablets have expired or you are not using them anymore, don’t throw them out in the garbage but ask the pharmacist how to dispose of any of them that you might have left.

Contraindications

Pregnant women and nursing mothers must not take this medication, neither should anyone that the doctor has not prescribed it for. It is also contraindicated in people who have hardened arteries, are allergic to any of these medicines, have heart ailments or thyroid problems or high blood pressure.
